Boeing opens new distribution centre in Henstedt-Ulzburg

26.10.2022

Henstedt-Ulzburg is flying high: This NORDGATE municipality is now home to the most important distribution centre for Boeing for chemicals and special materials in Europe. The location is the largest and most modern facility of its kind worldwide, setting standards for sustainability and offering employees a state-of-the-art workplace.

In collaboration with the municipality of Henstedt-Ulzburg, HIH Invest Real Estate (formerly Warburg-HIH Invest), WTSH GmbH and the logistics real estate specialist Verdion, Boeing has officially opened its new distribution centre for customers in the European aviation industry. The new distribution centre will supply special materials and chemicals to airlines, maintenance companies and aircraft manufacturers.

The branch in Henstedt-Ulzburg is the largest and most modern facility of its kind worldwide. This strategic investment in the metropolitan region of Hamburg, one of the most important aviation hubs, allows Boeing to deliver chemicals and special materials to more than 6,000 international customers. At the same time, the new location makes an essential contribution to the Boeing growth strategy in Germany as well as the European aerospace market.

"The inauguration of this new location sends a strong signal for the continuing commitment of Boeing in Germany. Despite these challenging times, it is our aim to secure the long-term growth of the aerospace industry in the region as well as to consolidate the leading position of Boeing in the European market for distribution services," said Dr Michael Haidinger, President of Boeing Deutschland.

The distribution centre is located on premises of 34,500 m² and encompasses 16,000 m² of warehouse space with more than 44,000 storage locations as well as a freezing chamber, cold storage and four isolated areas in which different goods classes can be securely stored. More than 200 employees work at the new location, distributed among the different divisions of Sales, Warehouse Logistics, Product Management, Export and Environmental Control, Quality Assurance and Supply Chain Management. To minimise the environmental footprint, the building was equipped with a heat pump, which will be followed by the installation of a photovoltaic system and charging stations for electric vehicles in 2023. Since the project meets high sustainability standards, the project partners aim to obtain a Gold certificate from the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council).

"We are thrilled that Boeing is showing its loyalty to the NORDGATE region and opening its new location in Henstedt-Ulzburg," says Mayor Ulrike Schmidt. "This allows Boeing to retain important skilled workers, and these workers can keep their jobs with Boeing. In addition to the settlement process, we will also assist Boeing with the planned further expansion. For example, starting from the end of the year, we will considerably improve bus transport in the commercial area North, allowing current and future employees to reach the location easily even without a car."
